ZF Pushes Brake-by-Wire Tech For Safer, Smarter Mobility

ZF, a global leader in braking systems, has produced more than 3 billion brake components over the past 50 years. As vehicles become more electrified and software-driven, ZF is now focusing on its Brake-by-Wire (BbW) solutions, which replace traditional hydraulics with electronic controls to improve safety, efficiency, and design flexibility.

According to ZF BbW is critical for the future of automated driving, electrification, and safety. Its solutions simplify vehicle assembly, reduce costs for manufacturers, and give drivers faster, safer braking performance.

The company offers multiple options — fully electric, hydraulic, or hybrid systems — to suit different customer needs. Its “dry” Brake-by-Wire solution eliminates brake fluid by using electric motors at each wheel. This makes braking more responsive, reduces maintenance, improves energy recuperation in EVs, and cuts particulate emissions. Demand for such systems is rising, especially in Asia.

In the US, hybrid BbW systems are being adopted, combining electric braking on the rear axle with hydraulic braking at the front, ideal for heavy-duty pickups. The company recently secured a major global order for this setup, managed by its Integrated Brake Control (IBC) unit. The IBC, in production since 2018, serves as a compact and lightweight system that combines stability control, brake boosting, and electronic control, suitable for all types of vehicles.
