ZF and BMW Sign Multi-Billion Euro Deal to Advance Future Drive Systems

ZF Friedrichshafen AG and the BMW Group have entered into a long-term agreement for the supply and continued development of ZF’s well-known 8-speed automatic transmission (8HP). The partnership, valued in the billions, will run until the late 2030s and will play a crucial role in supporting both companies’ approach to open-technology, low-emission mobility.

Mr. Mathias Miedreich, CEO, ZF, said the agreement is a strong signal of innovation and sustainability at a time when the global auto industry is undergoing rapid change. As part of the collaboration, ZF will keep advancing the 8HP transmission to meet the needs of future drive systems, making it more efficient and better suited for new propulsion technologies.

Mr. Sebastian Schmitt, Head of ZF’s Electrified Drive Technologies division, said the long planning horizon gives both companies clarity and stability as they prepare the next generation of the 8HP for future performance and efficiency demands.

The partnership strengthens ZF’s position as a global system supplier, offering both companies greater visibility and reduced risk in a fast-evolving market. The agreement also lays a solid foundation for supporting the transition toward lower-emission mobility solutions in the years ahead.
