BYD Showcases Its Electric-First DM-i Hybrid Technology in India, Promises Over 1,200 km Combined Range

BYD India has showcased its DM-i — Dual Mode Intelligent — hybrid technology in the country, marking a significant step in the world’s largest NEV manufacturer’s plans for the Indian market. The technology, which is expected to launch soon, promises a combined range of over 1,200 km and is designed to address two of the most persistent barriers to EV adoption in India: range anxiety and dependence on charging infrastructure.

Unlike conventional hybrids that treat the petrol engine as the primary source of power, DM-i flips the equation. It is electric-first — the car runs primarily on battery power for most everyday use, with the petrol engine stepping in as a generator to charge the battery or as a direct power source when needed. The result is a system that allows a significant portion of daily commutes to be completed in pure electric mode, while seamlessly supporting longer journeys without the limitations typically associated with battery electric vehicles.

At the heart of the system is a highly efficient 1.5-litre Xiaoyun petrol engine with an industry-leading thermal efficiency of 43.04%, paired with high-speed electric motors. The system operates across three modes: a pure EV mode for urban commuting, a series hybrid mode where the engine acts as a generator while the electric motor drives the wheels, and a parallel mode where the engine directly supports the electric motor during higher power demands. The system accelerates from 0 to 100 kmph in under 5.5 seconds, delivers fuel consumption of 4.8 litres per 100 km under NEDC conditions, and is equipped with BYD’s Blade Battery for safety.

Mr. Rajeev Chauhan, Head of Electric Passenger Vehicles Business at BYD India, said, “The introduction of DM-i technology marks a pivotal step in our commitment to making sustainable mobility more versatile and accessible for Indian consumers. By enabling electric-first driving for daily use while seamlessly supporting long-distance travel, DM-i addresses some of the most pressing barriers to the adoption of sustainable motoring in India.”

BYD’s roots in plug-in hybrid technology go back to 2008, when it unveiled the world’s first mass-produced plug-in hybrid vehicle at the Geneva Motor Show. Since then, the DM platform has evolved continuously, with cumulative production now surpassing 8 million units globally. DM-i technology will play a central role in BYD’s 2026 roadmap for India, enabling portfolio expansion and strengthening the company’s position in the New Energy Vehicle space.
