Auto Sector at an Inflection Point: P. Kaniappan Highlights EV-Led Transition

The global automotive sector is undergoing a major transition, and India is well positioned within this shift. From diesel as a dominant fuel, the industry is now moving into a phase defined by electrification and autonomous vehicle technologies.

While China leads the world in EV production and sales, India – the fastest-growing major economy – has set a target of achieving 30% EV penetration by 2030, up from the current level of around 10%.

These remarks were made by Mr. P. Kaniappan, Head – Counselling & Assessment, Indian Foundation for Quality Management (IFQM), and former Managing Director of ZF Commercial Vehicle Control Systems India Limited, while addressing the THRIVE TN Summit 2026 in Chennai.

According to Mr. Kaniappan, Tamil Nadu is strongly positioned in the EV space and currently produces the highest number of electric two-wheelers in the country. He also referred to ZF WABCO as a company distinguished for developing software in India for global applications, particularly for commercial vehicles. He urged the student community to leverage emerging opportunities and contribute to the sector’s transition.

Emphasising the role of MSMEs as key growth drivers of the economy, he noted that they must consistently maintain quality standards by partnering with educational institutions such as IITs and Anna University. In the EV domain, MSMEs can focus on areas including battery management systems, controllers and powertrains.

The full-day THRIVE TN Summit 2026 featured several engaging sessions on electric vehicles, advanced electronics and renewable energy. The event, organised under the leadership of Mr. K. E. Raghunathan, National Chairman – Association of Indian Entrepreneurs, was inaugurated by Dr. T. R. B. Rajaa, Honourable Minister for Industries, Investment Promotion and Commerce, Government of Tamil Nadu.
