IGEM 2026 Puts Spotlight on Hydrogen and Sustainable Mobility at SRMIST

The SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST), Kattankulathur, hosted the 2nd International Green Energy Mobility Conference (IGEM 2026), bringing together global experts, researchers and industry leaders to discuss the future of sustainable energy and mobility.

The conference highlighted the urgent need to transition towards cleaner energy solutions, especially in transportation, which remains a major contributor to global carbon emissions. Experts emphasised hydrogen as a key fuel for the future, alongside advancements in electric mobility, renewable energy and energy storage technologies.

Dr. Ibrahim Dincer, a global authority in sustainable energy systems from Ontario Tech University, stressed the importance of accelerating the shift to clean energy and underlined the role of platforms like IGEM in enabling meaningful collaboration and innovation. Adding to the global perspective, Dr. Imre M. Szilágyi from the University of Miskolc highlighted how engineering solutions can improve quality of life while advancing sustainability, with a strong focus on energy storage and international research collaboration.

From SRMIST, Dr. M. Leenus Jesu Martin, Dean of Engineering and Technology, spoke about the growing importance of interdisciplinary research in green energy, highlighting the institution’s work in hydrogen, solar and electric mobility. He also pointed to the potential of hydrogen as an everyday fuel, even for applications like cooking, signalling how deeply sustainable energy could integrate into daily life.

Dr. Napoleon Bernard Shaw, Dean of Research, emphasised SRMIST’s strong research ecosystem and its focus on hydrogen and sustainable technologies, aligned with India’s ambition to become a global green energy hub.

Meanwhile, Dr. K. Kamalakkannan, Head of Automobile Engineering, described the conference as a crucial platform for exploring advancements in hydrogen technologies, EVs, renewable charging systems and green infrastructure.

The two-day conference served as a collaborative platform for sharing research, exchanging ideas and building global partnerships. Aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, IGEM 2026 reinforced the importance of clean energy, innovation and climate action in shaping a more sustainable mobility future.
