IoT continues to be important for firms – but concepts outpacing reality right now

More than four in five respondents to a survey from Ventana Research say the Internet of Things (IoT) is important to their future operations.

The research identifies the best practices and trends for the IoT and operational intelligence technologies and processes.

Alongside the 81% who cited the importance of the IoT, 61% said that its use is very important to speed up the flow of information and improve the response time of their business processes. 58% said it is key to speed up the flow of information to customers and consumers.

However, the intentions of organisations to embrace IoT and use operational intelligence often outpace their current capabilities. More than two thirds (68%) said they are satisfied or somewhat satisfied with their organisation’s ability to capture and correlate data from events. After that, managing and using it becomes more complicated. 31% reported difficulties with inadequate data or in managing external data. 48% said they spend the most time reviewing event data for quality and consistency issues.

“This research confirmed that organisations are embracing this new technology, but many lack the necessary capabilities,” said David Menninger, Ventana SVP of research. “The biggest area of struggle for companies adopting IoT is a lack of resources to integrate and apply this new technology.”
